A career politician, Budget Committee Chairman Martin Sabo is in his eighth term as Minnesota's Fifth District Representative. He was born in Crosby, North Dakota in 1938. He attended Augsberg College where he received a bachelor of arts degree. Mr. Sabo lives in Minneapolis.

Established by the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Act of 1974, the House Budget Committee monitors federal taxation and spending in general. Its objective is to ensure House compliance with the budget planning process. Like its Senate counterpart, the Budget Committee is the first committee to review the President's proposed budget each year; however, it does not directly approve legislation or spending bills. The House Budget Committee is unique in that it deals with issues as an entire body; it has no subcommittees.
